bomma

hi-tech crystal

The BOMMA brand has been in the market for several years. Our initial collections introduced at the Ambiente Fair in 2010 received several awards in the first year of the brand’s existence. They were also added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York and won the Chief Editors’ Award at the Designblok exhibition in the Czech Republic. Last but not least, BOMMA (then under the name Bohemia Machine Glass) was nominated as one of the top three manufacturers of the year in the Czech Grand Design competition. Our brand and each collection in particularare characterized by the effort to combine traditional handmade production with latest technologies in order to achieve the best result. BOMMA unites these two different approaches, giving them a new direction. This year’s catalogue presents our existing assortment, as well as new products for 2012. It includes contributions by the successful designers Jiří Pelcl, Maxim Velčovský and Thomas Jenkins, as well as new collections by the Olgoj Chorchoj Studio and Studio Koncern Design. Of course, I cannot omit František Vízner, the doyen of Czech glass making, and Mária Hostinová representing the youngest designers. Our cooperation with the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (AAAD) and the Studio of Product Design III AAAD has resulted in several interesting student works, which are introduced in a separate section of this catalogue. This year, we are launching our own production of crystal glass in a continuous furnace in Světlá nad Sázavou. Thanks to the combination of our own production and high quality glass cutting, we make glass with unmistakable brilliance, which can rightly be called HI-TECH CRYSTAL. We continue in the best tradition of Bohemian cut crystal, using modern methods. We believe that our path combining quality design with advanced glass-working technology is the right one andthat the BOMMA brand will grow through this combination of tradition and high technology.

The collection of BOMMA drinkware from Světlá nad Sázavou has been developed. When considering which designers to invite, we – together with the factory management– wanted to achieve variety in terms of style and generations of the Czech designer scene. At the very beginning of the project, we invited six designers to prepare HI-TECH CRYSTAL BOMMA collections, which we now introduce. The BOMMA range includes works by Czech glass-making masters František Vízner and Vratislav Šotola, together with designs by Jiří Pelcl, Maxim Velčovský, Rony Plesl and Studio Koncern Desing and our designs. The youngest generation of Czech designers is represented by Mária Hostinová and several students of the Product Design Studio at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. In addition to our own production line, strengths of the BOMMA brand include machine cutting and flexibility associated with intense technological development. Our collections have successfully started;now we are in a long-distance race. The so far positive response to BOMMA has convinced us that the combination of classical, modernist work of František Vízner with that of middle and youngest generations of Czechglass designers can succeed not only on the European scene.
