Production efficiency and emission reduction

In our glass production, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce energy consumption without compromising quality. The largest energy item is glass melting – the basic process of the glass craft. This is where we focus on innovations that bring efficiency and savings.

Production energy consumption

18 % of consumption consists of melting and cooling by hand production
38 % of consumption consists of melting and cooling by machine production

New furnace „Světluška“ (2023) at the Bomma glassworks

Saving almost
800 tons of CO₂ per year

Since 2013, we have been enriching the combustion air with 3% oxygen, which increases combustion efficiency and reduces gas consumption. Modernization of furnaces, development of our own equipment and optimization of production processes are part of a long-term strategy that allows us to systematically reduce the energy intensity of production.

New melting unit

Up to 30 % energy savings per 1 kg of glass

Technological innovations include the modernization of melting units, the development of our own machinery (e.g. feeder or bottle machine) and the introduction of a closed circuit for cleaning grinding water using a flocculation purifier. These steps contribute not only to reducing energy consumption, but also water and the amount of waste. Another significant milestone was the cessation of lead crystal melting in 2019 and its replacement with our own lead-free glass with a lower environmental impact.

Main benefits of our technological innovations

  • reduced energy consumption and CO₂ emissions
  • higher efficiency of melting units
  • optimization of production processes and reduction of material losses
  • reduction of water consumption thanks to closed cleaning systems
  • long-term stability and efficiency of production operations

New electric furnace at the Rückl glassworks

Carbon neutral

The sister glassworks Rückl is using an electric furnace in production from 2025, which contributes to the energy diversification of production. In this electric ladle furnace, we only melt our special product Bomma Cullet, making the process carbon neutral. This high-quality glass consumes significantly less energy while maintaining maximum glass quality. Thanks to the shorter melting time, 30-40% of energy is saved compared to melting a glass block.

BOMMA Cullet

This approach also includes BOMMA Cullet – a high-quality lead-free studio glass that we supply to glassmakers and studios worldwide. Thanks to its glass pebble shape, it allows melting only small batches of material at lower temperatures than in the classic melting of glass stock.

  • energy savings during melting in the range of 30–40%
  • lower melting temperatures: 1250–1280 °C, or 850–900 °C for smaller melting plants
  • reduction of gas consumption and CO₂ emissions at our partners
  • expanding the positive impact of innovation throughout the value chain

Technological innovation is not a one-time step, but a continuous process that allows us to reduce the energy intensity of production in the long term and move the glassmaking craft towards a more sustainable future.
